Alistair Darling wins tax battle with Gordon Brown
Gordon Brown has been forced into an embarrassing climb down after Alistair Darling won the battle to maintain pooled inheritance tax at the next budget. It is believed the Gordon Brown has been placing pressure on Alistair Darling to completely remove inheritance tax and use this as a way to polarise voters and suggest that David Cameron is "looking after his friends". So has this affair backfired?
The very fact the Alistair Darling has won the battle with Gordon Brown has surprised many in the Labour Party as when Gordon Brown was in the Treasury it was Tony Blair who was forced to follow Gordon Brown rather than lead. It would appear that Alistair Campbell, the former Tony Blair spin doctor, is behind many of the new initiatives by Labour as we head towards an open "class war" as we approach the next general election.
However, the fact that the UK economy is struggling, those on low incomes are falling behind the rest, taxes are set to rise and public services are under pressure appear to be issues which fall down the pecking order in the minds of Labour spin doctors, compared to the creation of a "class war" as the focal point of the next election.
