UK government to tax frequent fliers

The UK government has announced plans to increase the tax burden on those who make use of the airline industry on a regular basis. Lord Turner, the chairman of the government's committee on climate change, has issued a report which will anger and dismay many in the UK business arena. It appears, yet again, that the business arena and those on higher incomes in the UK will be subjected to more "indirect taxes" which will increase the cost of living in the UK.

While there is no doubt that progress needs to be made on the climate change front, why is it that every time the UK government promises to assist with climate change it always results in higher taxes?

Let's not forget that the UK authorities, via the Labour government and the Conservative government previously, encouraged growth in the UK economy airline industry and now they are looking to increase the tax burden.

There have also been calls to increase direct taxes for UK airlines, with suggestions that there should be some form of taxation on the amount of carbon released by airlines. However, while initially the increased taxes may well have to be met by the airlines there is no doubt that UK consumers will in the end pay the price.
