UK government turns on the public sector

In a sign of the times, or more likely a fight for votes in the UK, MPs have announced plans to name and shame those who have enormous salaries in the public sector. This is a sector which has ballooned in size under the Labour government but one which is now apparently public enemy number one due to the fact that gold plated pension schemes are still popular and the number of employees within the public sector continues to rise.

The focus upon salaries in the public sector will also bring in the large-scale remuneration packages available in the private sector, and the difference in growth, which is certainly in favour of the private sector. However, it is the job security within the public sector and the above average incomes available in some areas which have caught the attention of UK voters and the UK public in general. So is the UK government priming the sector for job cuts?

There is no doubt that the UK government will at some stage have to reduce investment in the public sector which will inevitably lead to job cuts. Whether this will happen before the election is highly debatable but those who feel their jobs in the public sector are secure may well have to think again after the election!
