Does Alistair Darling want to come clean over spending cuts?

There is growing pressure on Alistair Darling today to step forward with a definitive plan for the reduction of the UK budget deficit which is forecast to be around £175 billion from the tax year 2009/10. There is also a growing belief that Alistair Darling wants to step forward with detailed plans, some of which will not be attractive to UK voters, but he has been stopped in his tracks by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown. So what is the truth?

One factor which has come to play over the last 24 hours is the reluctance of a number of high-profile MPs from the Cabinet to step forward with substantial support for Gordon Brown. It is no secret that Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown are no longer as close as they once were and indeed many believe Alistair Darling would have been forced out of office had it not been for the UK recession. So the idea that Gordon Brown is blocking Alistair Darling from releasing more detailed plans is one which has been doing the rounds from many weeks and appears to be very plausible.

Will Alistair Darling dare move away from the official party line as we approach the next general election?
