Premier League seeks to protect image rights

The Premier League is said to be in talks with HM Revenue and Customs regarding image rights for players plying their trade in the UK. There would appear to be two very different trains of thought from the Premier League and HM Revenue and Customs regarding the amount of tax due on image rights which are often paid to overseas operations.

The tax figure in question is believed to be around £100 million and legal opinion is divided as to whether the Premier League has a viable argument in favour of image right payments. This is yet another situation in which HM Revenue and Customs appears more determined than ever before to ensure as much tax income as possible is secured.

It is common knowledge that many players have image right payments written into their contracts although it does depend on the player and the club as to what kind of figure they can negotiate. We recently covered another strategy by HM Revenue and Customs which has seen overseas sports stars forced to pay more tax to the UK revenue from their worldwide earnings. This is a trend which is set to continue for some time to come and has been very successful in increasing tax income for the UK authorities.
