Why Do Green Issues Always Mean Higher Taxes?

Over the last few years one of the main issues on the political scene has been the environment and 'green issues' with a whole host of new taxes introduced to tackle global warming, etc. But why do 'green issues' always means higher taxes and is this extra money actually being used for the proposed purposes?

If we take a close look at just one of the areas of industry which has been hit by 'green' issues, air travel, we will all be aware of the increase in charges and taxes over the last couple of years. But where has the money gone to? Has it been ploughed back into the 'green' sector?

Despite a number of attempts to clarify how and where this extra finance is spent there has been very little confirmation from the authorities. A number of influential reports have cast doubt on how and where the finance is being spent, at a time when we are being asked to contribute more and more to the cause.

Increases in fuel duty have now become an integral part of the governments annual budget, car tax has been increased on so called 'gas guzzlers' but are there any obvious improvements? Can we actually see where the extra money is being spent?
