Darling Puts His Hands Up In tax Row
Even though it was Gordon Brown who laid the plans for the abolishment of the 10p tax band this tax year, it is the Chancellor Alistair Darling who has taken the flak. During a heated exchange with the powerful Commons Treasury Committee, Mr Darling admitted that the government got it wrong and should have acted sooner. He also claims that he will address the issue of those still worse off after the budget, during his pre-budget report later in the year.
Many political observers have spotted a change in the government’s recent attitude, with many highlighting a number of error admissions. Whether this is just a public relations stunt or an attempt to bury these issues forever remains to be seen, but many believe that the government will have difficulty recovering from their current predicament.
The face off at the Commons Treasury Committee comes on the same day as reports suggest that Gordon Brown has again performed a u-turn on the 42 day detention issue for suspected terrorists, which he is trying to force through the House. If the reports are correct this is yet another embarrassing climb down by the Labour Party and another nail in their coffin.
