Government Destroying Tax Records After Just 2 Years

In a move which has seen many people hit with bogus claims by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) it has been confirmed that HMRC is destroying vital tax records after just 2 years in storage. This has seen a number of tax payers hit with large repayment requests years down the line, unable to back up their case because the documentation has been destroyed. With no evidence to prove mistakes have happed within HMRC the tax payers in question have no right of appeal.

Those who have been involved in amending any area of their tax records will be well aware of the mass of different people in the so called loop. There have been instances whereby just one person has forgotten to change details on a record, perhaps a new tax code or something similar. Many of these issues are picked up years later and the authorities are not slow to try and claim back ‘unpaid’ taxes.

While this latest revelation about the way in which the authorities hold information about the UK population will do nothing to improve confidence in the system, quite how this will be resolved or systems amended remains to be seen.
