Can Small Businesses Afford To Go Green?

As the recession in the UK continues to take a firm hold of the economy and business numbers, news that many smaller businesses are suffering will not come as a surprise. However, with taxation for all UK business now at an all time high, is it time to go green? Or is the expense too much for many smaller businesses?

While the benefits of going green are there for all to see, it is the initial cost of changing systems, machinery and other vital elements of a business which is scaring many people off making the move. Cheaper energy bills, reduced office expenditure and the like are all possible but can be costly in the short term. There had been signs that the government were going to use more of a 'carrot and stick' approach, but this seems to have been exchanged for a progressive taxation policy.

Unless the authorities revert back to a more business friendly approach to recycling and green issues we are unlikely to see any major changes in the current economic environment. There is a willingness from some to make the move, but many feel that they need to be met half way by the authorities.
