Alistair Darling fails to pacify the TUC
Some said he was brave, others said he was stupid but whatever the reason for Alistair Darling's show at the Trade Union Conference in Brighton today it did not go down very well. However, while he stuck to the official line that pubic sector pay awards had to be in line with the government's target - which is well below the current rate of inflation - he did indicate that moves may be afoot to tax the rich to help the poor in the UK. More spin or is there substance behind this?
When you also look at the fact that Gordon Brown has written an article for the internal House of Commons magazine which suggests that it is time for Labour to review all policies, there is a suspicion that Old Labour is on the way back. It seems as though the Unions have won the battle!
It has long be a concern amongst the business community that the more Labour relies upon the Unions to keep the party from bankruptcy the more Union friendly policies would start to appear. There is evidence that Labour is taking a soft line with the Unions with little comment about the threat of a new 'winter of discontent'.
