What does Gordon Brown mean by a review of Labour policies?

News that Gordon Brown has written an in depth article about the need to review Labour policies in the light of the current economic environment has sent shock waves through the business communities of the UK. Are we set to move back to a time when the Union held power? Is this a short term shift? Is new Labour dead?

While the official line from Downing Street is that the article has been misinterpreted it seems that there may be more to this than meets the eye. Gordon Brown is literally in the last chance saloon and he seems to be grasping at straws to try and improve the situation. Even the move to hold the recent cabinet meeting in Birmingham (at tax payer's expense) was seen by many as a party political move with Labour support in the area ebbing away at an alarming rate.

The Trade Union Conference also saw Alistair Darling suggest that while the government was firm on the public sector pay deals which they expect, there seems to be a suggestion that the rich may well be heavily taxed over the coming weeks, months and years. The problem for Labour supporters is the fact that Old Labour put them in the wilderness for over a decade and there is no reason to suggest that anything has changed.
