Is the Labour Party budget starting to unravel already?
This evening there are claims that the Labour Party budget is already starting to unravel with confusion as to who will actually benefit in the short, medium and longer term, the problem with the whiskey pricing and the ongoing debate about VAT. The Tory party now appears to have received information suggesting that the Labour Chancellor was actually considering an increase in VAT to 20% after the next general election.
This new revelation on the VAT front overshadows the 18.5% debate which has already been pushed into the public domain and has put Alistair Darling on the back foot. The Conservative party is making a specific attempt to highlight potential secrecy and tax bombshell elements of the future Labour government economic policy. If they can manage to undermine the trust which many in the UK still have in Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling this could have serious consequences going forward.
The posting of the 18.5% VAT discussion on a government website in error has proved to be a potential bombshell and one which Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling are struggling to cope with. The next few weeks are vital not only for the UK economy but also the Labour Party.
