Gordon Brown under attack from OPEC
The oil producers of the world have today rounded one UK PM Gordon Brown after he demanded the OPEC cartel maintained output levels to control prices rather than reducing supply levels in order to try and push up the very low price of oil. The cartel has accused Gordon Brown of making demands on industry at a time when the UK government is still raking in record receipts from tax on oil production and fuel sales in the UK.
While many people in the UK are now aware that the vast majority of the price of a litre of petrol is paid in tax to the UK government Gordon Brown still seems intent on trying to blame OPEC for the fluctuations in the price of oil. The UK motorist has been and continues to be one of the prime sources of income for the UK government aside from income tax on wages. At some point it looks as though motorists in the UK will again rise to the challenge and take on the government's ever excessive tax take on petrol.
We have seen a number of challenges to Gordon Brown's leadership on the petrol tax front but the more tax which is taken from the UK consumer the more chance of friction in the short to medium term.
