Beware of the fake HMRC website

It has come to the attention of Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs that a Danish group has been attempting to defraud UK taxpayers with a site that looks identical to the official HMRC.gov.uk website. The process, known as "phishing", is a way of farming confidential taxpayer's details which will be used for fraudulent activity in the future.

While normally this site would have received very little in the way of visitors, the fraudsters have also begun a fake e-mail campaign reminding UK taxpayers that their tax returns need to be in by 31 January 2009. The various links in the e-mail are fake and take visitors to the wrong site where they are invited to enter their details on a site which looks and feels the same as the official HMRC.gov.uk site. Those who believe they may well have been the subject of fraudulent activity should contact their bank as soon as possible and alert them to any potential fraudulent withdrawals.

Initially the HMRC was ridiculed for its slow integration of the Internet into its services but of late the online tax return system has acted like a magnet for fraudsters and con artists. Please note that the Inland Revenue would never send you an e-mail direct and neither would they add links to their site in an e-mail.
