Is Gordon Brown losing the fight for a second term in office?
A Guardian/ICM survey today puts the Tory party 12 points ahead of Labour in the polls with just over one year to go until the next general election. Despite recently clawing back a double-digit lead it appears that the ongoing recession is starting to hit the Labour support base to the delight of the opposition parties. Finally it appears that the UK public is growing tired of Gordon Brown's repeated claims that the UK is on the verge of recovery, that the recession was not his fault and that pouring billions and billions of pounds of UK taxpayers money into the economy is the only way forward.
In a bizarre replication of the recent debate over the Conservative party, we are also seeing a number of disagreements with the Labour Party regarding Europe and the way forward with the UK economy. This potentially widening split could seriously hinder Gordon Brown as the political parties begin to move into "general election mode". The recent concerns of UK workers with regards to the use of foreign workers for UK government contracts would appear to be the icing on the cake for opposition parties who have long warned the UK government about the increasing number of overseas workers and the impact this would have on the UK employment sector.
