Are we seeing the last throes of Alistair Darling's political career?
As the G20 meeting approaches it would appear that Alistair Darling has been put forward by Gordon Brown to do the "dirty work" and beg for assistance from other governments around the world. While Gordon Brown seems to take centre stage when times are good it seems Alistair Darling is always on hand for the not so attractive comments and statements which need to be made. So are we seeing the last throes of Alistair Darling's political career?
There is no doubt that Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown entered government as strong friends and there's also no doubt that their relationship has been strained to say the least of late. Alistair Darling was particularly critical of his colleague when suggesting that the government as a whole should apologise to the UK electorate about the state of the economy. Gordon Brown's refusal to do this, and his apparent angry confrontation with reporters aboard a government jet, would suggest that the two are further apart than ever before. While it is unclear who will be willing or able to take over Alistair Darling's position in the short-term, bearing in mind around the flak they would obviously receive, there would appear to be changes afoot at the heart of the UK government.
