Will the winner of the next election hold a poisoned chalice?

As the Tory party seemingly ready themselves for office next year there is a feeling that the next government of the UK will have an almost impossible situation to deal with. In the midst of the deepest recession for many years, the largest government budget deficit in history and national debt which is now approaching £2 trillion it seems that the next incoming government will have very little room for manoeuvre. In fact there is even a suggestion that the next government is effectively been set up for a fall because they cannot win or turnaround the economic woes of the UK within the next government term alone.

A number of Labour MPs have been heard to suggest that losing the next election may not be the worst thing that could happen as it will allow them to re-trench and re-focus on the core elements of the Labour Party. It is also common knowledge that UK taxpayers will be hit with massive tax rises over the next three or four years to pay for the ever-growing national debt. It appears as though Gordon Brown's "scorched earth policy" may well be coming to fruition leaving the potentially new government, i.e. the Conservative party, on a hiding to nothing.
