Pensioners flat used to print £20 notes
While the last few months have brought about financial distress for many in the UK the situation has also led to a number of frauds and attempted scams. The latest scam to be uncovered by police involved an 83-year-old who allowed his living room to be used by a gang of criminals who were intent on printing money with a face value of £8.5 million. Using a £12,000 industrial toner machine the gang had printed a number of £20 notes before police were alerted to the situation and a covert surveillance operation was put into action.
As the UK economy continues to move downwards police are expecting a significant number of fraud and scams to appear over the weeks, months and years ahead as people become more and more desperate. There is also concern that embezzlement will also become a significant problem in the UK in the short to medium term as consumers struggle to make ends meet.
Over the last few weeks we have seen insider dealing prosecutions, identification theft on the rise, forged banknotes reaching epic proportions and general criminal activity increasing. The law enforcement agencies in the UK are already at breaking point with many suggesting a peak has not yet been reached.
