Recession Watch : Political Polls

One of the first signs indicating the end of a recession is a return of support for the government of the day, i.e. the Labour Party. However, the situation in the UK is slightly different because of ongoing scandals regarding MPs expenses and the recent e-mail sage emanating from number 10 Downing Street. However, many political analysts believe that as and when the UK recession ends we should see a significant increase in support for the Labour Party ahead of the next general election.

In truth, voters in the UK have very short memories when it comes to the economy and as soon as the bad times are history many will start to look forward. If as expected the UK economy does recover in the short to medium term then we could have a serious battle on our hands at the next general election in 2010. However, as we touched on above there are other political issues which appear to have cost the Labour Party votes in the short to medium term and whether these will return in the longer term remains to be seen.

If Gordon Brown is able to turn this around and see a substantial return of support throughout the UK he will go down as one of the best escape artists in UK political history. Only weeks ago he looked dead and buried and even days ago he appeared to be under severe pressure with many Labour backbenchers calling for his head.
