Alistair Darling risks the wrath of US leaders

In a rather alarming move, Alistair Darling has now turned his attention to the US economy and suggested that his US counterpart Tim Geithner should do more to reduce the risks of toxic assets in the US banking system. Just at a time when the UK government and the UK economy is in need of significant assistance from overseas partners it seems that the UK government has decided to "pick a fight" with America.

Yet again this leaves the Labour government open to claims that they should be concentrating on the UK economy rather than looking to dictate and criticise overseas counterparts who will at some stage have a significant impact upon the UK recovery. While there's no doubt that the worldwide recession began in America and will probably start to recover in line with the US economy, the UK authorities also have their part to play in the downfall of the UK economy.

There are some who now suggest that the G7 and G20 associations are experiencing significant infighting after a period of relative calm and "togetherness". Whether Alistair Darling is looking to curry favour with his European counterparts or deflect attention from the UK economy is open to debate, but this is a very high risk strategy.
