Just when the economy showed signs of recovery........

There can be few Prime Ministers who have experienced the difficult situations and circumstances which have arisen under Gordon Brown's tenure over the last 12 months. We have seen the credit crunch, the collapse in UK banking system, the recession, infighting in government, the MP's expenses scandal and now we have the outbreak of swine flu which could turn out to be a worldwide pandemic.

Even though very few people will have sympathy for Gordon Brown at this moment in time, there is no doubt that his attempts to refloat the UK economy, no matter how expensive they have been, have saved the UK from falling further into a depression. It is also worth remembering that prior to the swine flu outbreak there had been increased confidence shown in the UK economy with signs that the worst may be over. While it would be wrong to suggest that UK is already showing signs of a further economic slowdown, the outbreak of swine flu could freeze cross-border trade and cross-border travel in the short to medium term.

This has truly been the worst week in Gordon Brown's time as Prime Minister and the problem is that things could get very much worse before they get better. The UK economy is still under real pressure despite the attempts of the government to turn the ship around.
