Further concerns over immigrant workers in the UK

You may recall some time ago there was significant conflict regarding Polish workers brought in to a liquefied natural gas terminal in Milford Haven, West Wales. As part of the resolution to a potentially damaging dispute the contractors agreed to offer local jobs to local workers before looking to bring in any immigrant workers. Earlier this week it appeared that the agreement had been broken when a number of Polish workers were brought on to the site and the Unions threatened significant industrial action.

However, after talks with the contractors on the site the threat of industrial action has disappeared with an understanding that the company involved was unable to fill the positions in question using local workers. What exactly has gone on behind the scenes remains to be seen but the dispute had threatened to bring in other sites across the UK as the Unions decided to take a significant stand against overseas workers coming to the UK.

There are concerns that this is just the tip of the iceberg and more and more immigrant workers will be targeted over the coming weeks and months as UK unemployment continues to rise and more and more people continue to struggle. Under EU regulations it is illegal to discriminate against EU member workers although the UK government is being pushed into a corner with nowhere to go.
