Lord Mandelson looks to secure UK Vauxhall jobs
Now that the carve-up of GM Europe has been completed, and the massive parent company is set to apply for bankruptcy protection in America, Lord Mandelson is now arranging a number of meetings with new owner Magna to try and agree a structure for the UK workforce and guarantees over employee numbers. Despite the fact that the company has verbally confirmed that the bulk of the 5,000 jobs currently connected to Vauxhall in the UK would be saved, the business secretary is looking to see how long these guarantees will last and plans for the future.
It is no secret that the UK car manufacturing industry is literally on its knees and the demise of Vauxhall would have been a killer blow. However, the company is now in new hands and all EU member states are looking to secure as many jobs locally as possible. Even though the UK government did not step forward with any potential funding or investment for the project there are high hopes that the vast majority of UK jobs will be saved. However, the government will at some stage need to reiterate its support of the business with difficult times looming.
