Royal Mail strike threat is real

Just a matter of hours after Lord Mandelson confirmed that the UK government is still looking to sell off a significant stake in the profitable Royal Mail operation the unions are already discussing a potential strike in the London area. The potential action is based on job losses and in light of the government's confirmation of a sell-off this is something which could be replicated across the country.

Even though there are few people who doubt that the Royal Mail does need a significant overhaul, with relatively high operating costs and a substantial pension fund deficit, the problem is that the UK government is literally selling off the best parts and leaving taxpayers with the rump. While a number of potential partners have been mentioned, with CVC the latest name, there are some people who believe the UK government will struggle to complete a deal at an acceptable price.

Those who believe the Royal mail sell-off is a one-off may well be surprised as the UK government has apparently ear marked a number of recognised government-controlled companies for sale. While the likes of the Royal Mint is one such institution which is apparently for sale, we await with interest further developments in this particular field.
