Carphone Warehouse insists the UK economy is stabilising
In a welcome positive note from UK economy, Carphone Warehouse today came out with a suggestion that the UK high street is beginning to stabilise and consumers are starting to spend again. This is the first real sign of any potential recovery on the UK high street and has been welcomed across the board as companies and investors look for any snippets of positive news.
The company believes that last Christmas, forecast to be one of the worst on record, was in fact better than many had expected and while profits at the company were down they were down less than many had forecast. Carphone Warehouse is a company which in many ways reflects the general trend and general attitude of UK consumers as the mobile phone industry is, while a luxury for many, a necessity for others. If the company has seen a stabilisation, or possible increase, in activity and consumer spending then this does bode well for the future.
However, as we have seen a number of "false dawns" many times before, it will be interesting to see if any other companies come out with a similar line with their next results. Hopefully we will start to see some kind of stabilisation and then potentially a recovery.
