Is the UK ready for the euro?
As we covered in one of our earlier post, Lord Mandelson has openly criticised UK opposition to the single European currency in direct contradiction of recent voting trends. He believes that inevitably the UK will be forced to scrap sterling and take on the euro with EU partners becoming further and further integrated within a "European state". While there is a suggestion that Lord Mandelson is not allowed to criticise the euro because of his severance package, this may just be political troublemaking.
However, yet again we see Lord Mandelson openly contradicting the feeling and wishes of the UK voters which was one of the reasons why he was ejected from the UK government some time ago. Despite his new personality since joining the Labour government he now appears to be showing signs of his old beliefs and opinions and a reluctance to understand and appreciate the mood of the people.
So far Gordon Brown has had very little to say on Lord Mandelson's comments but just after a tumultuous week in his political life, it could well start all over again. Will Gordon Brown ever learn? Will Lord Mandelson ever change? How will this impact upon the Labour Party vote?
