British Airways seeks further union concessions

Despite the fact that British Airways talks with unions have adjourned until Wednesday it appears as though a deal is edging closer by the hour. The company is looking to agree up to 3000 redundancies which will see the company secure its short, medium and long term future although there are rumours that the company is also looking to impose a two-year pay freeze on staff.

We have discussed over the last few days, British Airways is looking to save a significant amount of many from it substantial cost base as the industry continues to struggle. Despite the fact that many staff have agreed to work up to a month for no pay, agreed to go part-time or agreed redundancies it seems that the directors want more. The unions are fighting the cause for their members well aware that the company appears to be using the difficult trading conditions of today as a means of forcing a beneficial long-term pay arrangement with the unions.

It will be interesting to see how this situation pans out because it has become a titanic battle between unions and the British Airways directors. This is one saga which still has many turn and a lot further to go.
