Is Alistair Darling a busted flush?
Amid signs of yet more discontent between number 10 and number 11 Downing Street many people are starting to write off the political future of Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling. His recent White Paper on the UK regulatory system for the financial markets hit the headlines with some eye-catching initiatives although ultimately many believe the paper is severely flawed and has a number of "holes" which can be exploited.
Over the last few weeks it has become more and more apparent that Alistair Darling and Gordon Brown are no longer singing from the same hymn sheet with Mr Darling suggesting possible U-turns on a spending review and the higher rate of income tax in the UK. These two particular initiatives were very much part of Gordon Brown's rescue mission and appear to have been undermined by his so-called friend and colleague Alistair Darling.
At a time when Labour backbenchers have been calling for UK government to pull together for the good of the party it seems as though infighting within the party could yet lead to the ultimate demise of Gordon Brown's tenure at number 10. He has been on the verge of leaving the office of Prime Minister on a number of occasions, but to his credit he has fought back every time although many believe he is now starting to grow very weary. While Alistair Darling appears to be heading for the exit door, could it be that Gordon Brown will not be far behind him?
