Will we ever see the massive financial conglomerates of the past again?
As the UK government and the UK regulators attempt to dismantle the massive financial machines which now operate in the UK, by trimming back on risk-taking and increasing the need for liquidity and asset backing, there are fears we will never see the financial giants of the past ever again. However, it is common knowledge that in every recession and every downturn there are periods of reflection and change, although ultimately these are often only short-term initiatives and short-term issues.
Even though the financial sector of today is under significant pressure from various parties, taxes are set to rise and the regulatory straitjacket is being tightened, make no bones about it, this will not last forever. Once the recession has ended and the memory of these hard times begins to fade we will see shareholders pushing for expansion, we will see governments looking to increase their tax income and we will see expansion in the sector again.
The UK financial sector, and the worldwide financial sector, is a massive machine which ultimately drives the worldwide economy forward and is more powerful than any other sector in the world. It is easy to forget that these particular markets are the lifeblood of corporate UK, the lifeblood of UK government fundraising activities and hold the key to the future of all of our financial lives.
