GlaxoSmithKline expects spike in swine flu vaccinations
Leading pharmaceutical group GlaxoSmithKline has today confirmed it has so far secured orders from 195 million doses of its new swine flu vaccine. This figure is expected to rise significantly over the coming weeks and months as governments around the world look to treat the worldwide population as soon as possible and stockpile vaccines for the future. The first doses of the swine flu vaccine will be shipped in September and in a reflection of the serious nature of the situation, the US government has requested GlaxoSmithKline supply pandemic products to the country, which are effectively unfinished vaccines.
The company is set to make hundreds of millions of pounds of profit from the ongoing swine flu pandemic which not only reflects the cost to governments around the world but the potential cost to the economy. There is no doubt that is swine flu continues to replicate at the current rate, which is not expected to peak until later this year, there will be more sick days, there will be more serious illnesses and unfortunately they will be more deaths around the world.
It seems that many people have yet to realise the serious nature of the swine flu pandemic and the impact it could, and probably will, have on the UK economy.
