Will Diageo backtrack on plans for plant closure in Scotland?

The last few days have seen the bid to save the Kilmarnock Diageo plant from closure reach new highs with hundreds of workers, members of the public and politicians involved in various marches and protests over the weekend. While the company itself has been fairly quiet over the last few days there is a feeling that despite the public outcry with regards to the planned closure, it is highly unlikely that Diageo will change its mind.

Indeed, as we have covered in some of our recent post, there is a feeling that the public and political protests against Diageo could well impact upon future business investment in Scotland. The company itself has become something of a political football with sceptics adamant that the various parties protesting against the closure have their own agendas. At the end of the day, Diageo is a business which is owned by shareholders and the directors are ultimately in charge of maximising profitability across the board.

There have been various threats of boycotts, industrial action and yet more protests against the company although there have also been accusations that the Scottish Executive only became involved at the 11th hour in order to try and save its own skin.
