Is the UK job market beginning to stabilise?

As the number of unemployed in the UK continues to climb higher and higher, recruitment agency Michael Page has today suggested that the UK jobs market is starting to stabilise. This advice seems very much at odds with that given by the vast majority of economic analysts who believe that UK unemployment, which has passed 2 million, will burst through the 3 million barrier in 2010.

While Michael Page agrees that it is too early to call the end of the recession it believes there is a growing confidence emerging in the UK and maybe the worst of the recession is behind us. Whether this is the case remains to be seen, because ultimately while the UK is still officially in recession we have seen the likes of France, Germany and Japan return to economic growth, leaving the UK lagging behind. This was something of a surprise as the UK economy was seen by many as the stronger in Europe and the most likely to recover in the short term.

The confusing scenario regarding the UK economy continues unabated and today's announcement by Michael Page has confused the situation yet further. As we have mentioned on numerous occasions, the truth is that nobody has been in this situation before and nobody knows ultimately when and how the recovery will spring into action.
