Scottish executive fails to save Diageo jobs

When drinks giant Diageo announced 900 job losses as its Kilmarnock plant the Scottish executive, led by the SNP, jumped into action and instigated a very aggressive and very public campaign against the company. While there were 900 jobs at risk there are many who claim this "megaphone diplomacy" has backfired with the group having walked away from significant public funds to save the plant and effectively dismissed the SNP rescue bid.

This is not the first company to quit operations in Scotland, even though Diageo still has significant exposure to the country, and there are many who now believe an overzealous campaign against the group could have long-term effects on the Scottish economy. As unemployment in Scotland continues to rise and the economy continues to struggle, the ongoing calls by the SNP for a debate on Scottish independence appear ill timed to say the least.

If nothing else, the ongoing worldwide recession has shown many people that Scotland would struggle, at least initially, if it was independent of the UK and funding arrangements were not in place. Who would bailout Scottish banks if we saw a repeat of the ongoing recession? Would the Scottish government be able to raise sufficient funds to run the country?
