General Motors to unveil future of Vauxhall at midday

The future all GM Europe will be confirmed at midday today in a press conference in Berlin. The ongoing breakup of the General Motors conglomerate continues and while it had been expected that GM Europe would be sold off there are now rumours that parent company General Motors could actually retain the Opel and Vauxhall brands in-house. This comes after lengthy discussions with a number of investors who had been interested in taking over the operations, something which will have a significant effect on the UK car industry.

There are literally thousands of jobs at stake at Vauxhall operations in the UK and while the UK government has been very vocal in support of Vauxhall there has been criticism of the lack of hard cash made available to the company. Lord Mandelson had initially taken on the baton of saving Vauxhall but as the situation has become more complicated he has returned to the background and been fairly quiet over the last few weeks.

Whatever happens to the GM Europe division it seems that Vauxhall in the UK should maintain a significant presence although there are concerns of potential job cuts if the "new owner" decides to cut costs.
