MG Rover report shrouded in controversy
The £16 million report into the collapse of car firm MG Rover is littered with controversial and potentially damaging statements for both the Phoenix Four and the UK government. The report seems to suggest that pay structures were "unreasonable" and even alleges that UK government ministers may have given misleading information at various press conferences.
Despite the fact that the UK government has tried to keep the report out of and the public domain it is now well and truly in the news and possibly the bigger news than it would have been if the government had not been so secretive. However, it does perfectly illustrate the demise of the UK car industry and the fact that names such as MG Rover are set to disappear forever along with the thousands of jobs which the industry has supported for many years. Indeed only yesterday we saw the takeover of GM Europe by Canadian car parts company Magna which looks set to deliver up to 1500 job losses to the UK.
The Magna deal is also shrouded in controversy because of the alleged close connections between Lord Mandelson and one of the wealthy Russian financiers. It seems that each page which we turn introduces yet another mystery and controversy to the mix!
