Is New Labour now dead?

While Tony Blair dragged the Labour Party kicking and screaming into the 21st century it seems that, if the leaked Treasury documents are anything to go by, that we are lurching towards a 1970s style public sector spending crackdown. The Institute for Fiscal Studies, an association which is often quoted by Gordon Brown, has today come out in support of the Conservative party's view of the UK economy and the ever deteriorating budget deficit.

There are real concerns that the UK government will need to implement a 1970s style crackdown on public sector investment, which will hit frontline and second line services. Despite the fact that the Labour Party has ploughed billions upon billions of pounds into the public sector over the last decade, there is too much fat and a need to trim this from the system. There is also a major concern over Gordon Brown's integrity with these documents apparently dated just prior to the last budget even though the figures suggested were not mentioned.

There is also concern that the Labour Party, after quoting David Cameron as Mr 10%, was in fact looking to instigate real investment cuts of just under 10% itself. On numerous occasions Gordon Brown has managed to rise from the dead but there are many who believe this is one step too far.
