Will student fees be an easy target for political parties?

As we covered in one of our posts early today there appears to be a consensus growing with regards to student fees and budget cuts in the UK. While many parties have come forward to suggest that student fees should be increased and the income level at which students have to pay for their education should be lowered there has been silence from the political arena.

There is strong speculation that both the Labour Party and the Conservative party are both looking towards student fees as potential cost savings in the future. While the situation in Scotland is very different, in that university education is free, a large element has always been levied on students in England. There is some debate as to how much could actually be saved in this particular area but it is thought it could potentially be billions of pounds.

The next few months will see a number of new initiatives announced by all parties looking to reduce the budget deficit and reduce the need to dramatically increase taxes. Whichever party is able to balance the books the best is likely to have a better than average chance of being successful at the next general election.
