UK car industry takes another body blow

On the surface, the move to consolidate Jaguars manufacturing capacity in the UK by a closing one factory over the next few years would seem little to be concerned about, with no job losses expected, the unions say it is actually a major issue. It is not certain as yet which of the Jaguar manufacturing plants will be closed although it is certain the plant will be located in the West Midlands, the former hotbed of UK car manufacturing.

The expected jobs loses, as and when the factory closes, would be accompanied by new employment positions at an expanded plant, something that the company is using to try and get the unions onside. However, the unions are adamant they will object to the proposals and are seeking to meet face-to-face with Jaguar management as soon as possible. Yet again, slowly but surely the UK car manufacturing industry is consolidating with many expecting the industry to effectively disappear over the next 20 years.

The UK government may yet again have to step in with significant state funding to assist the likes of Jaguar, which is part of the Land Rover Group, in order to maintain jobs in the UK. This particular sector is turning into something of a disaster for the UK government and an expensive one at that!
