Could we see the first £10 bottle of champagne?

In a sign of the times it has been revealed that we could see the first £10 bottle of champagne this Christmas with a stockpile of champagne held by retailers in the UK due to a lack of interest during the recession. Already we have seen the likes of Majestic Wines offering a 40% discount on top of the range champagne and many people believe this is just the tip of the iceberg and prices will fall further in the short to medium term.

In a further reflection of the difficult times being experienced by champagne producers at the moment, the French authorities have confirmed that the champagne harvest will be reduced by 50% next year in order to support prices in the short to medium term. For many years the county of Cheshire has been seen as the focal point of the UK champagne market but even there we have seen a significant reduction in the intake of this expensive liquid!

Over the last two years we have seen well-known businesses go under, flamboyant entrepreneurs declared bankrupt, top of the range house prices collapse and now we see the final nail in the coffin with a collapse in the price of champagne across the UK. The boom times have certainly gone but they will be back again, with a vengeance!
