UK call centres attract scammers

It is common knowledge that a number of criminal gangs have targeted various UK call centres with an indication that the security of financial and private information of customers has not always been top of the agenda. Despite the fact that this area of the UK business arena has grown substantially over the last few years, there have been routine lapses in security which have led to significant amounts of personal data and highly confidential financial data falling into criminal hands.

UK crime gangs, and overseas crime gangs for that matter, are now regularly targeting call centres and other similar operations where they believe it is easy to infiltrate the workforce and obtain highly confidential and potentially lucrative information. As we covered in one of our earlier post, with 83,000 tax scam e-mails reported in September alone, more and more people are now at risk of both ID theft and fraud.

While there are simple checks which we can all implement to protect ourselves as much as possible, there is a growing concern that with more and more private information passed to the business arena, more and more UK citizens and UK businesses are being left wide open to abuse. The UK government and the regulators have come down hard in the past on companies found guilty of security lapses, something which we can expect to continue for some time to come.
