CWU warns of more crippling strikes for UK post
The Communication Workers Union has today reiterated the fact that if talks do not resume after next week's planned strikes there will be further industrial action in the run-up to Christmas. While many people had expected a flurry of strikes as we approach the festive period, this is clarification that the union is starting to play hardball and looking for the UK government and Royal Mail management to step up to the mark.
At a time when the UK economy is still on a knife edge, this strike could literally push many smaller and medium-sized businesses over the edge as we approach the ever more important festive period. It is evident that consumers are starting to become concerned regarding their Christmas gifts and Christmas post and for many people "Christmas could come early" this year. The UK government yesterday joined the party suggesting that it was time to resolve the issues and move on.
However, the unions are under the impression that Lord Mandelson is looking to reduce their power which will make them more of a dangerous animal in the run-up to Christmas. Behind-the-scenes activity on the part of the UK government would indicate they are concerned that the strike could impact on voters as we approach the next general election.
