Last ditch bid to avert postal strike
Unions and Royal Mail management are today in talks regarding planned strikes which will literally cripple the UK postal system. These last-ditch talks have been scheduled as we approached the first official strike date after which point many people believe it would be difficult for both parties to get around the negotiating table. Is there hope for the immediate future?
The very fact that the postal system is a vital element of the UK economy and the UK business arena is something which is paramount in the minds of Royal Mail management, unions and the UK government. Many people believe that eventually we will see a compromise agreement although at this moment in time both parties are so far apart it appears difficult to see how an agreement may be reached this week.
Not only is the immediate future of the Royal Mail business at stake but the long-term situation is shrouded in mystery with rumours that the UK government may well open up the postal system to allow more competition. This would have a negative impact on both the Royal Mail business and Royal Mail workers who are ultimately led by the unions. The next 48 hours are vital if any agreement is to be reached with the unions adamant they will not call off the strike before a deal has been brokered.
