Postal strike called off

As we insinuated early today, the Royal Mail postal strike has been called off with a suggestion that there will be no industrial action until at least the New Year. It seems as though the unions have bowed to pressure from Royal Mail, the government, consumers and postal workers to call off any strikes in the run-up to Christmas because they would prove seriously detrimental to the future of Royal Mail.

While there is a feeling that the ongoing talks are still some way off a long-term resolution the unions have been beaten back on this occasion although the monster is by no means dead. It would appear that a sensible approach has been taken by all parties involved, although the suggestion that 25% of Royal mail workers were set to break the picket lines tomorrow did seem to weaken the union's position somewhat. We can expect the situation to calm down in the short to medium term although talks in the New Year will be required to avoid any further industrial action.

Businesses up and down the UK will be relieved at today's news with the economic situation in the UK still very much on a knife edge and many businesses fearful of the impact that further strikes would have had on their business.
