Cadbury union leaders to meet Kraft Foods
In a sensible, but surprising development, the Unite union has revealed plans for talks with Kraft Foods next week. As we have covered on numerous occasions, Kraft Foods is currently in the process of attempting to take over Cadbury and has already tabled a £9.8 billion bid. Whether or not his bid is enough to gain control of Cadbury remains to be seen but the fact that unions are willing to talk to Kraft Foods would indicate there is a chance of the company changing hands in due course.
While Cadbury directors are firmly against the £9.8 billion bid, and this in no way weakens their position, there is a feeling within the markets that the company will be under more pressure in the short to medium term with two other potential bidders showing their hand. It will be interesting to see how the Cadbury directors conduct themselves in the days and weeks ahead because ultimately if the end is nigh they will need to protect the interests of shareholders and employees alike.
It is becoming more and more evident that unions in the UK are taking a more hands-on approach in the workplace and becoming proactive rather than reactive.
