Don't forget your online tax return deadline of 31st of January

For those who submit their tax returns online do not forget the deadline is 31 January after which penalties will be incurred and costs will be added to your tax bill. Despite the fact that taxpayers were able to submit their tax returns on paper towards the end of 2009, more and more people are now looking to submit their tax information online. However, while this is very useful and very convenient for many people there is a need to be aware of potential fraudulent activity.

Each and every year we hear of new scams and new e-mails doing the rounds which appear to be from the Treasury, requesting private financial information which should never be divulged. Therefore, if you're looking to submit your tax return online by 31 January you should be the one to make contact with the revenue via the correct online submission form and if you do need to clarify information with a Treasury representative you have every right to call them back and make sure they are who they say they are.

Those who automatically assume that e-mails and telephone contact from those purporting to be part of the Treasury Department are all above board and correct are the ones who come February could well be counting the cost of this rather naive approach.
