London jobs market "strong", says Halifax

The London jobs market went from strength to strength in July, with an increase in the number of job placements and strong demand for staff, according to the latest London Labour Market Report from Halifax Financial Services. The report's unique employment barometer registered a level of 64 in July, up from 61.3 in June, which is the highest level since November 2000.These figures point to an upturn in London labour market conditions after four consecutive years of expansion.Pay rates were also shown to have risen in July, as firms were forced to compete for the best staff. Permanent staff are particularly in demand, as their numbers have fallen - workers in the healthcare sector were the most in demands. Official data also shows that the number of people registered as unemployed in the capital is down, falling by 3,700 from May to 145,200 people, or three per cent of the working population.Tim Crawford, group economist at Halifax Financial Services, commented on the findings: "The London labour market has strengthened over the past few months and there was a clear increase in job placements during July. "Salary levels also rose over the month as firms paid more to attract qualified staff in the Capital. "By industry, healthcare workers are enjoying the strongest demand at the moment."
