Why Is Gordon Brown So Quiet?

In the good times Gordon Brown is regularly splashed across the TV screens but there are growing concerns that the PM is running scared even after last weeks relative success against the Conservative Party and the David Davies saga. At a time when the Chancellor has been feeling some serious heat from those in the City, with many concerned that the UK economy is about to fall off a cliff, where is Gordon Brown?

Historically in an economic crisis we would see the likes of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown side by side backing up each other against the press and financial sector. However, aside from the Northern Rock rescue there has been very little co-operation between Alistair Darling and the Prime Minister prompting speculation that there is a growing rift between Number 10 and the Treasury.

It is widely known that Alistair Darling was not best pleased having to take much of the blame for the 10p tax allowance farce, an episode which severely dented his reputation within the City. There has also been much speculation that Darling will be replaced as Chancellor in the next cabinet shakeup, although some even suggested he would have gone by now had the post not been seen as something of a poisoned chalice at the moment.
