Government Plans To Revamp Qualifications Is Attacked

As they say in business, if it is not broken why fix it, but this does not seem to be a philosophy which the UK government is following. News that A levels are to be replaced by Diplomas has not been well received by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the fact that the first batch of students will take the new qualifications in September has set the alarm bells ringing.

While the Labour Party has been working on replacing the current qualifications system for some time there has been a growing opinion that the introduction of these new qualifications will cause major confusion and affectively downgrade A level qualification. The move is the biggest change in the UK education system for decades although nobody is quite sure how the new qualification will change the situation.

The idea that the new diplomas will mix both academic studies and practical studies is not a new format but there are concerns that the new style will create a two tier qualification system making it more difficult for businesses to assess the real value of candidate qualifications. While the authorities claim that it is too late to halt the introduction there is a growing resistance to using them as a tool when employing new recruits.
