Crime And The Credit Crunch - What Is The Issue?
As the Conservative party continue to crow over their discovery of a confidential draft left from Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to Gordon Brown regarding the expected increase in crime as the economy falters many questions are being asked of Ms Smith. This is the same lady who has stood up in the Commons to suggest that crime is falling, while her letter suggests otherwise, this is the same lady who had antagonised the whole police force in order to same a few hundreds pounds per officer. So how do her actions and her views stand up to scrutiny?
It has to be said that no minister in their right mind would go on public record to suggest that crime will increase as the economy crashes - two factors which many people are already blaming the government for. However, her determination that no extra funding will be available for the police is somewhat hypocritical especially when she has been at the forefront of a push to ensure MPs packages are increased by an amount substantially higher than inflation.
We are in the realms of 'do as I say, not what I do', something which is becoming increasingly familiar to this government.
