Gordon Brown and the US bailout
Oh how Gordon Brown will love news that the US Treasury is set to take a lead from his rescue plan and inject $125 billion directly into shares in the US financial sector. While the package is part of the $700 billion package which seems to have been ongoing forever Gordon Brown is now being billed as the saviour of the worldwide banking sector - he even has Noble Prize Winners talking about him as a world beater!
Credit where credit is due, Brown did take a risk with his equity led bailout but how come Alistair Darling is not receiving any of the credit? After all he is in charge of the Treasury, isn't he?
To many experts in the financial world the last few days have shown that Gordon Brown is not able to leave the Treasury alone. Under Tony Blair he froze the PM out of the picture but puppet master Gordon Brown still manages to pull the strings as PM and Chancellor even now. So what is the future for Alistair Darling?
It is no secret that Darling will be out at the next reshuffle only surviving the last one because it was a very sensitive time for the economy. However, he will likely be able to step back in the knowledge that his CV has been stamped and he will probably walk into a job at one of the very City institutions he has been attacking of late. How fickle we all are when it comes to money and power!
